I am a battery farm chicken,
But I wasn't always.
I used to be a human being.
I turned into a chicken,
through a strange chain of events.
I got a job here 2 weeks ago,
I was the person who cleaned the cages. From what I remember I fell, and woke up in this cage.
I have been trying to piece it together, to figure out if there is some sort of remedy, a fix for my unique condition, but it's hard to think in this tiny cage.
I remember making eye contact with one of the chickens right before I fell, staring into the abyss that was its black pupilless eyes, and that's where it cuts off and I wake up in here. I have to figure it out, because I am quickly forgetting what it means to be human. I am beginning to experience time differently. I am losing track, losing track of my human conception of time.
The halls are full of dust that is a mixture of our food, feathers, and feces. Through the thickness of the air, I see a figure. It looks like a man. He comes over. I can hear him speaking, but can't understand, why? Am I losing my grip of language.
No, he's not speaking English. That's Spanish. What is he saying? I make out a couple sentences.
I am sorry my friend, he says, now you have to figure it out. Like I did.
He walks away, and what seems like an eternity passes. They come ocassionally and pull decaying bodies from underneath my feet. The weak chickens sometimes choke and fall over, suffocating under our feet the light drains out of them 0and they decay slowly. I walk on them, my feet collecting the mange that will eventually be me, if I don't escape.
Two men walk down the hallway. I hear them talking.
To be continued....
